Braille Project: Promoting Accessible Education for Visually Impaired Students

Since 2013, Disabled Welfare Society (DWS) has been a trusted partner of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), Bangladesh, implementing the Braille Project to ensure visually impaired students have equal access to the national curriculum. This initiative aims to bridge educational gaps and promote inclusive learning opportunities for primary-level students.

Core Objectives:

  • To produce high-quality Braille textbooks aligned with the national curriculum for primary students.

  • To respond to students’ interests by producing supplementary reading materials, including fiction, novels, and comic books.

  • To ensure timely distribution of Braille books to visually impaired students across the country.

Achievements:

  • Over the past 11 years, DWS has successfully produced and distributed Braille textbooks to thousands of primary students nationwide, supporting their access to quality education.

  • In the last year alone, DWS produced 1,300 copies of Braille textbooks for primary students.

  • The project produces supplementary reading materials such as Fiction, Novels, and Comics, fostering literacy, imagination, and a love for reading among visually impaired students.

Infrastructure and Expertise:

  • The project operates with two state-of-the-art Braille embossers and full supporting setup for high-quality production.

  • A skilled team of four Braille transcription and proofreading experts ensures accuracy, readability, and quality control.

  • Robust quality assurance mechanisms are in place to maintain production standards.

Impact:

  • The Braille Project has directly benefited thousands of visually impaired students across Bangladesh over the past decade.

  • By providing both textbooks and supplementary materials, the project supports literacy, creativity, and personal development among visually impaired children.

  • DWS is recognized as one of the few organizations in Bangladesh with the technical expertise, production capacity, and experience to implement large-scale Braille publishing.

Future Plans:

  • Establishing a Braille Library to provide visually impaired students with a wider range of learning and reading materials.

  • Increasing nationwide distribution to reach more visually impaired children in underserved areas.

  • Continuously upgrading technology and staff capacity to enhance the quality and efficiency of Braille book production.

Through this sustained partnership with NCTB, DWS continues its mission to empower visually impaired students through education, fostering equity, inclusion, and lifelong learning.
